Huanglong, China

- Mineral Pools inside this Magical Valley -

We arrived at Song Pan Airport (JZH), and as you know we like adventures! Without a scheduled driver or motorist, we got off the plane on the way to Jiuzhaigou. The small airport was more than 4,000 meters high, and we could feel it already at the exit of the airplane.

Searching among the few cars that were parked there, we looked for an ordinary taxi. Through a magnificent application, we were able to communicate by showing the address of the hotel that we would be staying. A woman taxi driver, with a super-friendly expression, said she would take us there. We got in the car and after 2 seconds she got her cell phone and started to communicate with us through her translator (download this app because in China they do not speak English). She asked if we would like to meet HuangLong. In our research, we had already seen this park, but we imagined that it would be a forehand, and for the short time we had aborted this visit. But with her suggesting, we saw that it would be possible!

It is said that to get to Huanglong you can not have altitude problems. If at the airport we could feel a little lack of oxygen, on the way to this parquet, we would cross a mountain and reach an altitude of 5,580 meters approximately. We knew nothing of it and at that moment, we were only exalted with the beautiful view that we had of the valley and of the high mountains around us, covered in snow on a beautiful day of sun. I (Gustavo), I could start to feel the lack of oxygenation in a short time in the car … But we kept going up there, and every minute, I felt more sleepy and weak. A little sickness, until the driver noticed and asked for altitude sickness … But there was not much to do, because no medical support, pharmacy, etc … We were in the middle of nowhere, and the feeling only worsened.

At the summit of the mountain we stopped to still try to enjoy the magnificent view, where we quickly made some photos, and for the first time of the trip, we put our feet in a lot of snow between old Tibetan flags that flew to the strong wind that walked through the vast valley. Then we began to descend, and fortunately the feeling of discomfort improved, little by little. Until, we arrive after about 1.30hr journey to the entrance of Huanglong Park. There we left all our belongings and suitcases in the taxi, and we walked for about 3.5 hours around the well-cared for parquet, and its curious geographic formations of limestone, earth and water (in our case, ice). At the entrance of the park, we bought the tickets and 2 oxygen tubes because we did not know what we would find ahead. Lots of steps on a 100% prepared ladder path, you could walk around the park along the trails the banks of the frozen riverbed, find waterfalls also frozen, and suddenly, at the end of the trail, come across in the middle of a Stunningly beautiful place. I think you can see a little of our photos of what we could find there. This place was called Yellow Dragon and it was 3573 meters high. That’s to say that you need to rise calmly and respect your time. We went in December in the cold month, inside the park we got to get -10 degrees, but that did not disturb in any moment, as we were prepared for the cold of the Chinese winter. The Huanglong National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. What makes it special are the mineral pools of a powerful blue, in the highest part of the park. You can take a cable car to climb, but in our case we had to climb on foot, because when it has snow it does not work. When the cable car is up, you climb up and walk downhill. The positive side in terms gone there in the winter is that we found almost no one and this made it even more special. It is recommended that you bring snacks and the oxygen tube (we used almost a whole tube, and as we were returning, we offered our second tube to a man who seemed to be needing it). Nor did we remember that the return journey would be along the same road and that we would need that tube more than anyone else. Average time for this activity (in hours): 4 to 5Opening hours: 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Worth the ride! You can trust. This park was certainly one of the high peaks in terms of natural beauty. We went to our taxi waiting there and by the end of the afternoon, we would leave for our next destination, in the vicinity of the Jiuzhaigou Park. The turn was complicated, I felt bad again on the climb to the top of the mountain, and I had the sensation of small fainting. It was like a dream, it was very sleepy and now, with a headache. Patricia was worried, and without much to do, we expected to arrive as soon as possible. Afraid to sleep, in the middle of that dark, curvy road, with a little hunger, with fear and sleep … It was an unplanned adventure that was no longer in our hands.
